Top Foods in Hokkaido:

Throughout our trips in Hokkaido, we have enjoyed different kinds of foods and many of them are Hokkaido's specialty which I will truly recommend to all of you! I have listed down the restaurants as below and ranked them according to my personal preference. It may vary from one person to another. However, hope the recommended foods below can help those who want to travel to Hokkaido and do not have much idea what is the foods that can try in Hokkaido!

1. Hakodate Morning Market, Hakodate  (Day 5)

Highlights: Seafood don, melon
2. Coco Ichibanya, Otaru (Day 4)
Highlights: Japanese curry rice
3. Noribetsu Manseikaku, Noribetsu (Day 6)
Highlights: Buffet dinner, snow crab
4. Harvester Yakumo, Futami (Day 6)
Highlights: Grilled chicken, Pizza, Scenic view
5. Lucky Pierrot Burger, Hakodate  (Day 5)
Highlights: Chicken Burger, Prawn Burger
6. Sakaimachi Street, Otaru (Day 4)
Highlights: Dessert, LeTao puff
7. Farm Tomita, Furano (Day 1)  Highlights: Butter baked potato

Hakodate Morning Market, Hakodate

Link to previous blog for details:  Day 5 (Hakodate) Blog
Highlights: Seafood don, melon

We have the freshest seafood don in Hakodate Morning Market! The raw sashimi bowl is so fresh and generous in amount! Hakodate has the most reasonable sashimi bowl in Hokkaido, unlike those in Sapporo city which has a lot of tourist trap. Sashimi lovers must come here if visit Hakodate, which is about 5 hours drive from Sapporo city.

We have the juiciest and sweetest melon ever in Hakodate Morning Market! The market is closed around 2pm and we able to get discounted melon slice just before the market closed. In Furano and Otaru area, we have seen one slice of melon is priced at 400JPY to 450JPY. However, in Hakodate area, the usual price for one slice of melon is at 300JPY! And what's the best part of it, we get the melon at only 200JPY just before the market closed! It is about 50% discount than other place! Yayy! The melon is ripe already and when the shop owner cuts it using knife, the juice directly flows down to the plastic plate. When you first bite the melon, the juice will just burst out into your mouth, followed by the sweet juice of melon, then it directly melts away, we hardly chew it as it is too soft and melts directly in our mouth, no kidding! Hokkaido Yubari melon is very expensive as it is cultivated with care in Yubari area and it is known as the most expensive fruit in the world! The highest price that has been sold for one melon costs about RM80k! You have to taste Yubari melon when you are in Hokkaido!

Coco Ichibanya, Otaru

Link to previous blog for details:  Day 4 (Otaru & Sapporo) Blog
Highlights: Japanese curry rice

We have the best Japanese curry rice over here! It has a lot of branches in Hokkaido. The one we eat is situated in Otaru. They have choices of curry with intensity ranges from 1 to 10 which is mild (i.e. not so dare diner) to most spicy (i.e. bravo diner)! You can mix and match the side dishes such as vegetables and potatoes. Apart from that, Hokkaido rice is very nice to eat and chew, the shape of the rice is full and texture is so nice to eat. Unlike the one we eat in hometown, the rice here is very nice to eat personally already, and what's more when you mix with the tasty curry beside! It is just so fulfilling and satisfying! Coco Ichibanya also has outlets in Singapore, however nothing beats those in origin country Japan! Still authentic the best right?

Noribetsu Manseikaku, Noribetsu

Link to previous blog for details:  Day 6 (Lake Toya & Noribetsu) Blog
Highlights: Buffet dinner, snow crab

We have Hokkaido's snow crab in Noribetsu Manseikaku hotel! Our stay in the hotel give us free entree of buffet dinner. However, it does not include snow crab, you have to pay extra for the order, but the price over there is considered cheap compared to outside. Initially we thought snow crab will be included in the menu as we see there are many tables with snow crab plate on table, however soon after we realize that those tables are belonged to tour group. Still to prevent disappointment, we spend money to order snow crab because seafood in Hokkaido is so famous that one must try! The buffet dinner has wide varieties of choices, inclusive chef handmade sushi on the spot, rice, noodles, dishes, sashimi, fruits, unlimited soft serve and desserts etcetera. The snow crab is raw and we not realize until almost finish the plate! They just served us the crabs together with lemons and just squeeze on top of crabs and you can enjoy the dish already. The meat is tender and so fresh that we can't even imagine they are raw!

Harvester Yakumo, Futami

Link to previous blog for details:  Day 6 (Lake Toya & Noribetsu) Blog
Highlights: Grilled chicken, Pizza, Scenic view

We have the best lunch view here in Harvester Yakumo! Sit in outdoor and enjoy the nature, enjoy the foods overlooking the vast green farm field and ocean which connects with the blue sky! It is KFC owned farm to table restaurant and has the delicous stone oven pizza! The reared chickens are tasty and served in different styles such as grilled and fried. You can mix them with french fries and salad as well. For pizza, they bake them in the stone oven in the restaurant which make the skin of the pizza smells charcoal and delicious when smell and crunchy when bite. Good foods with beautiful landscape, who would say no?

Lucky Pierrot Burger, Hakodate

Link to previous blog for details:  Day 5 (Hakodate) Blog
Highlights: Chicken burger, Prawn burger

We have the most famous burger chain restaurant in Hakodate! It has many branches in Hakodate and all the them with own unique theme. This famous burger restaurant can be found only in Hakodate, so make sure you try it when you visit Hakodate! The best seller is chinese chicken burger! No doubt, this chicken burger is tasty as the chicken meat is tender and fulfilling, fried to perfection and topped with sweet sauce. The chicken meat is not the flat chicken patty that we usually get from fast food, but there are 3 big chicken balls in between the breads. The cheese french fries are not bad as well. Do I mention that, the menu is very affordable as well? Local and good quality foods that come with friendly price tag, no wonder it is famous not only among tourists, but locals as well!

Sakaimachi Street, Otaru

Link to previous blog for details:  Day 4 (Otaru & Sapporo) Blog
Highlights: Desserts, LeTao puff

We have the most varieties of desserts here in Otaru! Strolling along the Otaru street, you will find yourself fall into food heaven! Apart from the beautiful Japanese style neighbourhood and varieties of souvenir shops, there are many cafes and buildings in Otaru which sell tons of desserts and cookies! The best part is many shops offer free tasting for us! So you get to try the cookies that you like and just decide to buy after that! No need to worry that we will get the snacks which end up not suitable for our taste buds. They are generous in giving the free snack samples which is a big plus point, compared to other places which may give lesser samples or worst still none. There are many cute cafes in Otaru as well and limited time puff in LeTao shop. The puff is truly delicious with crunchy skin outside and creamy texture inside! I can eat all sorts of dessert in Otaru and skip lunch! Haha.. Dessert lover will fall in love in Otaru!

Farm Tomita, Furano

Link to previous blog for details:   Day 1&2 (Furano) Blog
Highlights: Desserts, Butter baked potato

We have the most scenic lavender farm and countryside view when dine here! The lavender smell spreads in the air and it is so calming and enjoyable to eat our foods in this cafe! The cafe is located on 2nd floor which makes the view is so beautiful as you can see afar and have the panoramic view to yourself! Since it is summer, flowers are in full bloom and Furano train is also in the operation. Furano train is operating only in summer so visitors can reach Farm Tomita easily from other parts in Hokkaido. The Furano train will passby occasionally and you get to see them when you eat here. Imagine yourself enjoying the foods, with the picturesque view in front of your eyes which is an infinity view of lavender flowers, Japanese villages and cute train in front! It just feels like painting!

Good food with nice lavender and countryside view

Top Dessert in Hokkaido:

Throughout our trips in Hokkaido, we have enjoyed different kinds of ice cream in Hokkaido which I will truly recommend to all of you! I have listed down the cafes as below and ranked them according to my personal preference. It may vary from one person to another. Sweet tooth lovers remember to check out the content below!

1. Lake Hill Farm, Toyako (Day 6)
Highlights: Assorted gelato
2. Sakaimachi Street, Otaru (Day 4)
Highlights: Matcha ice cream, Rainbow ice cream
3. Farm Tomita, Furano (Day 1)
Highlights: Lavender ice cream

Lake Hill Farm, Toyako

Link to previous blog for details: Day 6 (Lake Toya & Noribetsu) Blog
Highlights: Assorted gelato

We have the best gelato plus scenic Mt. Yotei view here! The shop is situated just a stone throw away from Silo Observatory which makes it very famous and crowded with visitors! Most of the time you will find yourselves queue up for the ice cream! They have two shops side by side, one is cafe and another is the famous gelato shop. They have indoor and outdoor area for you to enjoy your foods. For us, definitely it is outdoor because we like to enjoy foods in beautiful environment! They have outdoor flower garden and big field overlooking Mt. Yotei. For those who scare of sunburn but want to enjoy the Mt. Yotei view at the same time, they are caring enough to have few chairs which are nearby the trees!

There have more than 10 kinds of gelato varieties here and all of them are freshly made from the farm, i.e. the milk is produced from their own ranch and everything is handmade and so refreshing! They have seasonal special gelato as well and some of the flavors are actually Toyako's specialty and only available here! We order two cones initially, for me I choose milk and green tea double scoop gelato, my bf choose blueberry single scoop gelato! For the milk, it is fresh and light to taste. Green tea flavor is average to me because I prefer thick texture kind of green tea, so it is not strong enough for me to have the wow factor. Now, blueberry gelato exceeds our expectations here! It is super duper nice as everything is freshly made here, which make the blueberry gelato is so fruitful to taste and smell just so so nice! It is so delicious that we back to the shop and queue again just to buy another double scoop of blueberry and red perilla gelato! Again, among all the flavors, blueberry really tops it! The ice cream price in Hokkaido is certainly not cheap, it can be up to RM15 per cone, however it does not stop us from ordering more! No regret, got to eat till satisfied here! Certainly recommend, must go must go!

After two rounds of gelato and enjoying the beautiful view, we go to 'exercise' our bodies by playing some light sports in the big field! They have free sport equipment for you to play, ie. badminton, ball, and many other kinds. No wonder this shop is so famous among families with kids! You can easily spend more than 2 hours here! We love this kind of leisure travelling!

Sakaimachi Street, Otaru

Link to previous blog for details: Day 4 (Otaru & Sapporo) Blog
Highlights: Matcha ice cream, Rainbow ice cream

We have the best matcha ice cream and top.1 Otaru specialty rainbow ice cream here! I am a matcha lover, and have already planned to savor matcha ice cream before coming to Hokkaido Japan. Japan is famous for matcha ice cream and matcha products (ie. green tea kit kat, fall in love so much!), and so when I get to know that there is one shop in Otaru that specially sells all green tea products, I certainly bookmark it during my visit to Otaru! They have light and thick types of matcha ice cream. For usual customer, mostly will choose light matcha ice cream. For me, I definitely will go to thick matcha ice cream without consideration. Thick matcha ice cream is slightly more expensive than light matcha ice cream. And similar with Lake Hill Farm, the price is around RM15~RM20 per cone as well. Again similar experience with Lake Hill Farm, I have ordered two matcha ice cream, 2nd round again! This matcha ice cream really gives me a WOW factor, especially after the 1st bite, my eyes directly enlarged, haha, no joke! It is so thick and good! Really have matcha texture inside, not the sweetened type but the genuine type! You got to try this when you come Otaru!

I have mentioned many times that Otaru is a heaven for dessert lover. They have this top.1 ice cream in Otaru that is famous and unique to try! Have you ever taste 7 layers of ice cream, with 7 types of flavors twisting rounds by rounds on top of the cone, and of course the heaviest ice cream ever! The 7 types of flavors are lavender, milk, chocolate, melon, green tea, strawberry, and grape. Your mouth and hands will get so messy when you eat this ice cream! Personally, I feel this rainbow ice cream is worth to give it a try, however speaking of the individual layer flavor, I personally feel is not on par when compared to the rest. But it gets unique when combined together! Like you have 7 kinds of ice cream lingered inside your mouth, all sorts of flavor mixed well with each other and make it so savory! Who says ice cream can only have one flavor? Yay for those indecisive types of people!

Shop covered with green which sells only green tea products!

Thick matcha ice cream in action!

Top.1 Otaru rainbow ice cream!

Farm Tomita, Furano

Link to previous blog for details: Day 1&2 (Furano) Blog
Highlights: Lavender ice cream

We have the best lavender ice cream with scenic Japan's countryside view here! Summer time in Hokkaido means lavender, lavender and lavender! (p/s: Of course also melon, but I do not get to try melon ice cream this time round..). Lavender ice cream here feels not the artificial kind of flavor that we often get somewhere else. It is not the kind of ice cream that feels too lavender flowery fake smell as well. The lavender ice cream in Farm Tomita here is just perfect and although light in texture, it does not feel fake or weird when eat it. What's more, the view in front of you is so picturesque and calming with beautiful lavender farm! Must try if you are in Hokkaido during summer!

Itinerary Summary:

Day 7 & 8 (Noribetsu & Otaru):
Jigokudani Hell Valley  Otaru Canal → Otaru Old Town → Otaru Sakaimachi Shopping Street → New Chitose Airport

Today we check out hotel from Noribetsu and drive to Otaru for our last shopping before heading to airport. We have decided to head to Otaru instead of Sapporo (our initial plan). This is because we prefer strolling in Japan's neighbourhood rather than city view. And since we came to Otaru few days ago for pre wedding photoshoot, it was very rush for us to enjoy Otaru on the day. I have yet to try the famous desserts and yet to buy souvenir for ourselves! 😂 After done shopping in Otaru, we head to Chitose airport and overnight in airport for our next morning flight.
