Pyrgos

Average Time Spent: 1 day

Highlights: Most local village in Santorini, least touristy, winery tasting

Suits: Wine lovers, culture lovers

Personal Star Rating:
Worth to Visit (★★★)

Where to GO?

Pyrgos town

👉 Background & History:
  • Highest and largest preserved local village of the whole Santorini island
  • Famous for wineyard with breathtaking view of caldera at both sides of the island

👉 How to Reach:
  • About 4km-5km from Fira, about 10 minutes bus or car trip

👉 Tips:
  • Come here about 2 hours before sunset, so that you can visit the village and buy some souvenirs, then end your day with some wine tasting in Santo Winery.
  • We have bought some souvenirs here in Pyrgos town. Although the varieties of souvenirs are not that much, however the price is truly cheap, the cheapest one we able to grab throughout the whole trip in Santorini.
  • We walk around aimlessly in Pyrgos town without any Google maps. Sometimes it is nice to get lost in this local village too.

Where to EAT?

Some of the recommendations which I feel truly good as listed below:

Santo Winery

👉 Background:

  • Large winery in Santorini island which boasts a beautiful caldera and cliff view
  • Receive very good online review regarding the magnificent sunset view and nice wine tasting
  • Tripadvisor shows Certificate of Excellence (Rating 4.5 among 3838 reviews, as of Apr 2020)

👉 Operating Hours:

  • Daily 10am - 6pm

👉 How to Reach:

  • Sit bus (tell the bus driver to drop you at Santo Winery by showing the photo, it is a popular winery in Santorini and one of the famous tourist attraction, so don't worry they don't know the place) or car (use google map below) to Santo Winery

👉 Tips:

  • Best time to visit is during sunset hours. Indulge in the wine tasting session with the spectacular sunset view is truly an amazing experience to try when you are in Santorini.
  • Remember to reserve especially sunset hours. The restaurant is very packed and you may not have the chance to dine in here if you walk in, unless u come during non-peak hours.
  • Restaurant has outdoor and indoor dining space. During sunset hours, outdoor space is especially crowded. However, when night hits, most people switch to indoor dining space as the weather outside is too cold to sit still for a proper dinner.
  • There are a varieties of wines for selection. You can ask the waiter for recommendation. We choose a sweet wine to share among us and the taste is so divine and taste so good, I have to admit it is so far the best wine that I have ever tasted.
  • We stay here from sunset till dinner, and have our last dinner in Santorini before boarding our flight back to hometown.
  • There is a souvenir shop just inside the indoor space restaurant, which sells all sorts of Greek products such as tidbits, keychains, lotions, shampoo, wine and etcetera. I have bought a branded Greek product called Korres over here, with the most signature sweet grapes series of lotion and shampoo. I am in love with the sweet and nice taste so so so so much.
