We had checked the weather forecast for several days and found out today was a good day to visit the famous Jungfraujoch mountain! So we woke up early in the morning for this mountain excursion! We bought breakfast from Migros supermart and boarded the train from Bern to Jungraujoch. Our planned route was Bern → Grindelwald → Jungfraujoch → (Wengen) → Lauterbrunnen. We just passby Wengen town and hence I denoted it by putting a bracket. It was good to go up via Grindelwald and come down via Lauterbrunnen as you can see two different Swiss towns in one day! The route can be vice versa too, depends on your itinerary planning. For us, we chose to go up via Grindelwald as we had visited this lovely town on Day 2 HERE already, so we just passed by Grindelwald town and boarded the train directly to Jungfraujoch mountain, and ended the day by visiting Lauterbrunnen town. So Day 4 trip to Jungfraujoch and Lauterbrunnen started!

👉Jungfraujoch mountain is ~3571m in altitude and hence you can see the snows and have the winter feeling throughout the year. No matter what season and which month you visit, you will not be disappointed as the high altitude grants yourself an amazing glacier experience throughout the whole year!
👉 Jungfraujoch mountain is a very famous excursion especially among tourists! Hence, start your trip as early as you can to beat the crowds! Upon researching for few months, I have realized that usually the weather in Jungfraujoch mountain is sunny in the morning. When approaching evening, the weather tends to become cloudier.
TIPS: Start the trip as early as you can as weather is usually sunny in the morning.
TIPS: MUST check live webcam before the trip, refer link HERE. There is no point to spend the money and go up to the top of mountain, just to see a foggy view. I am talking CHF137.40 per pax for this excursion!
TIPS: Do not buy return ticket to and fro the same town, unless you only interested to explore the same town on that day. When buy entrance ticket, inform clearly the counter sales person the route that you prefer (usually they will ask as well, but just in case). Route can be one of the options below:
(a) Grindelwald → Kleine Scheidegg → Jungfraujoch → Kleine Scheidegg →Wengen (b) Wengen → Kleine Scheidegg → Jungfraujoch → Kleine Scheidegg →Grindelwald
TIPS: If you want to have the best view of the trip (well, actually to me, both sides of views are equally amazing!), you can refer below:
1. Those who choose Route (a):
- Travel up via Grindelwald, you can sit on the right for the best view.
- After that, change the train to Kleine Scheidegg, you can either sit on the left for an up close view of the Eiger North face or on the right for a wider view across the mountains.
- Lastly, change the train to Jungfraujoch, you will climb the tunnel at an altitude of 3571m across the rocks of Eiger. It is amazing to know how the tunnel is explored, knocked off and became a train path for tourists to visit today. The work and sacrifice behind this construction are to be remembered. Just to add on also, the train will make a short stop along the way at Eismeer. You can get off the train for a few minutes to enjoy the view of eternal snow and ice through the panoramic windows, it is just like a sneak peak to the top of Jungfraujoch mountain. You can let your body to adapt to the high altitude environment for few minutes as well.
2. Those who choose Route (b):
- Travel up via Wengen, you can sit on the right for the best view.
- After that, change the train to Kleine Scheidegg, you can remain to sit on the right for the best view.
- Lastly, change the train to Jungfraujoch, you will climb the tunnel at an altitude of 3571m across the rocks of Eiger. It is amazing to know how the tunnel is explored, knocked off and became a train path for tourists to visit today. The work and sacrifice behind this construction are to be remembered. TIPS: Due to the high altitude of Jungfraujoch mountain, some may find it hard to breath and dizzy once alighted from the train. Please be careful and let your friends know if there is a need for medical attention. There is always a medical team standby there for any emergency. On the day we visited, we really witnessed the case where the old folk couldn't take it and fainted. For us, we actually felt hard to breath as well once we reach the top due to the high altitude issue, and needed some time for our body to adapt to it.
TIPS: For those Swiss Travel Pass holder is entitled to 25% discount, entrance ticket is not cheap, quoted at CHF137.40 per pax after discount. Glacier experience comes with a cost for sure, but it is a memorable one, not to be missed when you are in Switzerland for this lifetime experience.
TIPS: What to do at the top of Jungfraujoch mountain? I will do the explanation with reference to the photo below.

Route for us on the day:
a) Alight from 1

c) Visit 3, 7, 8, 9
- A tunnel that leads you through all the way to attraction point 8, which is an ice palace on top of the 3571m Jungfraujoch mountain! The ice palace is maintained at low temperature and opened to visitors all year round. You can see many ice sculptures and art pieces here, such as polar bear, eagles, penguins, etcetera. And the highlight of the ice palace is actually Ice Age squirrel character called Scrat who always search for walnut and cause catastrophic incidents! Scrat is trapped in the ice palace of Jungfraujoch mountain 😂.
- For attraction point 9 is a beautiful Plateau, but you MUST withstand the cold and crazy blowing wind there, to enjoy the panaromic view of glacier mountains from there! There is a Switzerland flag here which you need to queue to take the photo with. It is a proof that you have conquered Jungfraujoch mountain, the wait is long but worth it! Remember to keep yourself warm in the attraction point 9, it is outdoor and windy and super chilly (hands frozen)! Did I forget to say it is slippery too? I not used to stand on the slippery surface of snow and need to grab on the rope beside 😨. Soon after, everything is fine already.
d) Visit 4
- Go to the observatory and have a panaromic view. Lesser people in attraction point 4 compared to point 9. The observatory is super windy. There is a short steel bridge on the edge that you can walk, but the wind makes it so hard, you can even feel it is shaking standing there, what's worst you are actually stepping your foots on the steel bridge which is actually wired steel and you can see the bottom of those snow white world under your foot.
e) Visit 10
